Create a brighter space with a Velux loft conversion

County Renovations Ltd helps homeowners across the UK unlock unused roof space with Velux loft conversions.

A Velux conversion, sometimes called a roof-light conversion, adds daylight and ventilation to your home by fitting high-quality Velux windows into the existing roof slope.

Because the roof line stays the same, a Velux conversion is one of the most cost-effective ways to convert a loft. Our team has decades of experience turning dark attics into bright rooms without changing your property’s appearance.

What is a Velux loft conversion?

A Velux conversion works with the structure you already have. Instead of extending your roof, we strengthen the floor, insulate the roof and install Velux windows between the rafters.

The skylights sit flush with the tiles or slates, so from the street there’s little change beyond the addition of attractive roof windows. Velux makes a range of window types – centre-pivot, top-hung, electric or solar-powered, and conservation styles – so we can specify units to suit your roof pitch and interior use.

These windows flood the room with natural light, improve ventilation and can be fitted with blinds for privacy. When combined with proper insulation and heating, a Velux loft becomes a comfortable bedroom, office or hobby room year-round.

Why choose a Velux conversion?

  • Minimal disruption. A roof-light conversion keeps the roof line intact, so there’s less structural work. It avoids the need for scaffolding over the entire house and reduces mess and noise. For most projects, the Velux windows are installed in a day or two, and the full conversion takes a few weeks.

  • Preserves the exterior. Since the roof line is unaltered, your property’s kerb appeal is maintained. The only visible difference is the new Velux windows, which sit flush with your roof and can be tiled or slated to match. This is especially useful in conservation areas where planners insist on minimal alterations.

  • Bright and airy. Velux windows channel natural light deep into the new room. Roof-light conversions can make a loft feel larger than it is and create uplifting spaces for work or relaxation.

  • Adds value. Converting your loft can increase the value of your home by up to 20%, depending on the quality and size of the conversion. Buyers often pay a premium for extra bedrooms or offices with plenty of daylight.

Is my loft suitable for a Velux conversion?

The main requirement for a Velux conversion is sufficient head height. We recommend a minimum vertical height of 2.2 metres from the floor to the highest point of the roof, although many customers choose Velux conversions when the loft measures around 2.4 metres.

Roof pitch should be between 15° and 90°, and the existing rafters must be in good condition. We’ll inspect your loft during our free survey and advise whether a roof-light conversion is viable. If headroom is limited, other options like a dormer conversion may be more suitable.

Velux Conversion Extension FAQs

Do Velux conversions work on all properties?

They work best where the existing roof has adequate headroom and a reasonable pitch. If your loft is very low or has a complex shape, a dormer or hip-to-gable conversion might be better.

A new staircase will take up some space on the floor below. We design staircases to be as space-efficient as possible and discuss options with you during the design stage.

Yes. Many of our clients add an en-suite to their Velux conversion.

This adds to the cost but can significantly increase convenience and value. We’ll assess plumbing routes and specify appropriate ventilation.

Velux conversions are quicker than other loft conversions because there’s less structural change.

From start to finish, including planning and building control, most projects take 8 – 10 weeks.
